15--DIGG--OOPS FORGOT !

Digg seems like a search engine that is devoted to news and reviews that can be narrowed down by subject. Digg seems fairly simple to navigate. although I wish one could narrow down more, you have to just take what is offered. Digg lends itself well to just surfing around. I liked it

23- REFLECTION

I have good and bad things to reflect upon about the 23 things. The concept of most of these " Things" is to make things faster and or easier. Information can be transferred as fast as the Internet can move. Social networking can be nice to connect libraries and share ideas and concepts. The 23 things make me wonder, why is there a need for so many different sites to access the Internet? one thought is that the Internet has become so polluted with unrelated garble that we have to form independent web sites to weed it out. Some sites i think lend themselves better to libraries, the purpose built sites like library-thing and libworm and others like pod-cast and maybe you-tube. My personal favorites were delicious, flicker, library-thing, facebook, digg, google-docs and pod-cast.
Some friends and i were talking about the future of the Internet the consensus seems to be that there are two basic types of website in the 23 things, the social networking and the tagging, we also wondered if someday the Internet would cost money. Would we have to pay for the Internet!!! I liked doing the 23 things(even though it was frustrating sometimes) I have not mastered any of them but i am familiar with all of them

THING 22- YOUR OWN 23 THINGS

How I would adapt the 23 things is simply to not go so fast. Some of the "things" were more in depth than others, some require more time to learn. Everyone has heard someone in their life say " I just have to mess with it for a while". The truth is it takes more than an afternoon to really learn these things. There is way more to learn to be truly proficient. I see some of these of "things" as very useful for libraries comunicating with other libraries from all over the world. however I do not see it as something the public should use to comunicate with their library this would be a mess in a years time.

21--POD-CAST

in short a podcast is like an individual broadcast for Internet users. I checked out some of the podcasts on the library site page and listened to some book reviews, poetry readings and a lecture. podcasting could be just like having your own radio station with some time and effort I suppose one could produce a very professional show hmmm get'in some ideas.

20--YOU-TUBE

I think that you-tube is a great platform to advertise and network from. Just like television as with you-tube it's the content of the subject matter not the television. Downloading a you-tube video will make any web sight more interesting. I looked at the summer reading programs for the Denver and the Cincinnati public library's. The you tube presentations were both very nice.

19--GOOGLE-DOCS

Google-docs is just like microsoft office but is web based this can come in handy when your away from your own computer, if you don't have enough room on your computer or simply don't want to buy the software i think this a cool idea.

18--WIKI

Wiki seems to be an information gathering site, ask a question and see who might know the answer. however i can not seem to relate it to the the real wiki. I found Wiki to be user friendly with one caveat, Wiki tends to be a bit cryptic, i had to click on random tabs that seemed unrelated to my search. the video was to short to impart any information and not very helpful.

17--LIBWORM

LibWorm is basically a purpose built search engine consisting of links to other sites of the same genera. This would be great for commercial use. the links would be found on the same Internet as you would normally access. So whats the point? speed, it's faster I have not been impressed at all with LibWorm.

10--STAFF--NING

Ning a networking site(yet another) i can hardly remember which one is which. I have visited the staff Ning numerous times and found it to be quite accommodating. obviously Ning is good for institutional use. Users can post a comments, give and receive feedback as well as post photos and blogs. This could be a very useful networking tool (and if you consider yourself to be very important) personal use also. One thing that i do not like are the google adds, i recognized one in particular as a known scam!(the one claiming of the riches to be made posting web sites on Ning's sponsor, google) shame on google! From my limited knowledge of this site I would describe Ning as a mix of blogging and Facebook.

11--MEEBO-- INSTANT MESSAGING

Meebo is a site that lets the user go to different "rooms" and share information. I like the posibilitys for information sharing, meebo would be great for institutional as well as personal use. The rooms are accsessable easy to navegate and easy to return to and save Athough Meebo seems to be poluted with mindless chatter. I think the possibilitys are great.

12--TWITTER

Twitter: all i can say is big deal! the distinguishing characteristic of twitter are negative at best. You have limited space for a web site address? limited space for text? -please! with these limitations how can Twitter compete with other sites of this type? or, maybe I'm just missing the point.

16--LIBRARY-THING

Library Thing seems like a tagging web site to share thoughts and opinions about books and movies, in addition one can catalog ones own personal collection. I think this would be a great networking tool for library patrons. Staff could also benifit by comunicating with other libraries. This site reminds me of my amazon account except with all the bells and whistles included.

14--DELICIOUS

Delicious seems to be like having your own internet! so far it seems very user friendly and easy to navigate. One thing i particularly like is the ability to save only one area of a website, an example would be The Weather Channell, one can save just local weather rather than the whole site. Delicious is yummy so far!...

13--TAGGING & DELICIOUS

Tagging and Delicious seems to one-in-the-same, they are both time saving and convenient. delicious is exclusively a 'tagging' site that allows the user to view a myriad of other user's web sites (tags). The user simply finds a web site of intrest and saves it to their Delicious account for all to see the knowledge sharing possibilities are limitless for both private and business..

8 & 9--YE OLD CAN O WORMS ! - FACE BOOK -

Whew! blast from the past overload, people from high school 30 years ago geez-lueez ! do i even want to know these people? personally i wanted to join facebook but never got round to it so the facebook thingie was quite timely to me. most people have heard of the abuses on facebook and the dreaded myspace. abuses seem to be very common in this arena, this is kind of scary to me because quite frankly, i don't know what I'm doing. i see friends on facebook talking to someone and now i know that there going on a trip in July, i could be someone else, I could rob them blind! i know, i know, privacy settings! but dose that not defeat the purpose of social networking? as of yet i can't see an application for face book in an institutional setting that would not cause problems. maybe with time and or feedback i will change my mind....

6 & 7--READERS & RSS

Web readers are like a port(reader) where ships(RSS) come in from different places . this analogy is how i understand web readers and RSS feeds. A web reader is a collection of web sites all in one central hub, this is a cool idea, i was disappointed however that it did not include all the fancy bells and whistles, but i could live with that if i had to access info quickly such as in a library or a business. but isn't this just like a glorified favorite list?..........

FLICKR 3, 4 & 5

This is cool! one problem i saw was sharing with every one, but you don't have to! i think that flickr is kind of like having your own web page for visuals, as far as using it for institutional purposes. I could guess at this point that other sites would be more applical, but none-the-less it's cool !......

THE KINDLE

Will the "kindle" take over the world??(of books) i don't know!! I am imagining a large book case with no books. will book stores be replaced by "kindle" stores?? I'm trying to not like this new-fangled-gadget but i can't. will Book stores still profit but online instead?? hopefully, you buy books on line and you can surf the Internet with WiFi of course, what about non-fiction, what about images and graphs?? (color would be nice) I guess i don't want to see the demise of my books. it sounds weird but books are a tactile experience the smell and the feel the turning the page..............

1 & 2 THE NEW INTERNET & BLOG

THE NEW INTERNET

Web 2.0 (as i understand it ) is an interactive Internet where the user contributes to the structure of the Internet. 2.0 shows great potential and may require a partial paradigm shift at least for me.

the Internet as we all know is a veritable cornucopia of information, however it is not always accurate and is frequently plaged with scams and schemes, wikapediea comes to mind as i think of interactive Internet applications, again not always accurate or do we really know? considering we would seek information on this site to gain knowledge of a given subject with little or no previous knowledge of it. Conversely the knowledge gained from 2.0 applications could be correct and with multiple sources could be even more in depth. On line college courses would be a good example( i think) and real time communication in an ever growing global market. the problem i foresee with 2.0 would be it's potential for even more abuse than the with the present web configuration.

on the other hand what technology has not been abused in some way left in the hands of a free society? but would this not lend it's self to a moral responsiblity issue, not web issue? If people create the internet they are responsible for it's content.

Having unlimited potential I am excited about 2.0 and where it will lead and look forward to exploring it further dispite 2.0's potential drawbacks i will still embrace it.....I look forward to your feedback!......
